Jersey native and Natural Hair connoisseur Janae Raquel launched several hair campaigns such as IAmMyHair movement and JustPieces after graduating from Rutgers. She has build quite an audience via YouTube, Twitter and her newly launched blog: janaeraquel.com
Celebrating a lot of firsts, Janae also launched her Teas and Tangles tour starting in of course Jersey and slowly making it’s way across the East Coast. She will be stopping in cities of Philly and DC in the upcoming months, but I had the pleasure of attending her meetup in Harlem at The 5 and Diamond Restaurant.
So many beautiful naturalista and transitioners and even women with relaxed hair that wanted to learn how to take care of it better filled the cozy restaurant in Harlem. Janae began the brunch by doing an introduction where we each introduced ourselves, our location and our staple products and it was refreshing to know how in love we all are with Shea Moisture products! It’s seriously a universal staple.
Unlimited cocktails were on the menu and of course I did not hesitate to take full advantage of The 5 and Diamond’s signature Bourbon cocktail with a guava base. Seriously though what is brunch without a few cocktails?
I chose the classic Shrimp and Grits for my entree with a side of buttermilk biscuits with berry jam.
After our introductions, we mixed and mingled and ordered our food. And since we are the social media generation, we left with more followers on all channels that we came with. It was amazing. Women with all different styles of natural hair. It was refreshing since I do believe that there is a shortage in the representation of all natural hair types. We tend to only see women with fine and long flowing hair as a result of biracial backgrounds. What about us women with hair like brillo pads?
Of course we didn’t leave empty handed. The event was sponsored by Cantu Hair products and EcoCoBeauty. So we each received a bag of hair moisturizer, a loose tooth comb, a cute little tea mug and a journal to document our hair routines as they change and products. Janae also did a giveaway of EcoStyler products by playing a trivia game.
The Harlem snowstorm was not match for my Jersey roots. Even though I wasn’t prepared (Had on penny loafers) I did have a lot of fun and it made for an interesting adventure on a Saturday morning.
