I was at a point in my life where I just wanted to write, but i had a job that didn’t give me that creative outlet. One of the most frustrating things for me was to begin a story, article or blog and have to pause my creative process to go to a place creatively dead. I knew writing was my passion when it consumed so much of my mind even when I was away from it. It was all I wanted to do. I had dreams about it. I planned my life around it and didn’t find much amusement in anything else.

It was easy for me to figure out what I was passionate about when I started to listen to what my emotions responded to. The morale in my former job was extremely low to the point where that lack of motivation started to trickle into the things that made me happy. When your job gets to this point, it is no longer just a job, it is a STRONGHOLD.

I’ve learned that when you settle for the misery and bad vibes just to make some money and pay bills you are in a place of stronghold. You have not yet opened yourself up to what you are passionate about and it happens. We spend our whole 20’s thinking we have to have it all together, but the thing about life is we’re always going to be figuring it out. No matter how old we get or how settled we get a new path will always present itself and we have to learn to navigate it. For some you may be at a standstill wondering, “what am I passionate about?” At one point, I thought it was education for me…boy was I wrong. It wasn’t education and I was working at a job that left me feeling drained as hell.

How do You Find Passion?

I think about passion everyday and how it shows up in my life. I was recently talking to a friend who hadn’t yet figured out what she was passionate about and it was causing her to slip into bouts of depression and I really didn’t know what kind of advice to offer her. I gave her the cliche line “Think about what you love and let it consume you.” That’s great advice for someone who knows what they love, but what about someone who doesn’t?

I am a subscriber of Levo League and it was ironic that I received an email from them with the subject: HOW CAN YOU FOLLOW YOUR PASSION WHEN YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT IT IS? Perfect timing right? Well, on Levo League, life coach Kristen Walker offers some amazing advice on finding what you are passionate about. She suggests thinking back months, years and even to childhood on the things that fascinated you. As a kid, we literally wanted to be everything on different days of the week, but in between that innocent indecisiveness that are some commonalities and information that may help you discover your path.

She also thought it important to decide how you want your passion to show up. For me I knew it was writing, but I had to ask myself in what capacity. Did I want to teach writing? What type of writing did I want to do? Fiction, non-fiction? How far did I want to take my writing? What’s awesome is that Kristen, and her life coaching company Clarity on Fire offers a free Passion Profile quiz that I highly recommend. I took the quiz myself and it was dead on.
